Opportunities From: North Helpline

Volunteers are needed to unload the donations we receive from partner organizations. This means volunteers will unpack bulk goods into crates and organize them according to categories in preparation for Distribution. Volunteers will be expecting to do some heavy lifting for this shift. You will be working with three to four other volunteers as we sift through items.

This summer we are hosting our 2nd neighborhood Block Party on Friday July 10th from 12pm-4pm. The event will take place right in front of our Lake City Food Bank location. This block party is a great opportunity for the community to come together - we're expecting around 400 attendees throughout the day! We're asking local businesses and organizations to provide music, entertainment, food, and resources. This event will be open to all and all food will be free of charge to the public. North Helpline will also be providing free popcorn, snow cones, and produce regardless of food bank membership.

About the Volunteer Role

This shift will assist staff in block party set-up / clean-up and carrying out the event. Duties may include decorating, serving as information ambassadors, monitoring garbage, restocking food and supplies, monitoring bathrooms, and other duties as needed.

Our mission is to help our entire community obtain their basic necessities. We need volunteers to help out with miscellaneous tasks around the warehouse. This flexible shift may involve finishing up home delivery box packing, helping out with food sorting, packing hygiene items, and/or helping disperse home delivery boxes to drivers. Make sure to dress for the weather, as our warehouse is not climate controlled! You can expect to work with 1 or 2 other volunteers as we sift through items. Help out our Food Access program by packing boxes for Friday Food Bank To Go (FFB2G). These boxes are for neighbors that frequently have more nuanced dietary issues, so they take a bit more attention. A typical week will be between 10 and 13 neighbors or 20 total boxes.

Everyday we get wonderful donations from local stores, p-patches, and individual donors. Help us ensure we are only distributing food that we would pick up ourselves! Volunteers are needed to inspect the quality of food coming in from donations and partner organizations. This means volunteers will bag produce and may also assist with bagging bulk items such as rice, dog food, potatoes, etc. Bread and pastries also get sorted after being inspected.  You can expect to work with three or four other volunteers as we sift through items. This position will require standing for the duration of the shift and frequent bending and lifting of 20 lbs. Please show up on time and sign in at the start of your shift.

A few extra points: At this time, we are asking that anyone exhibiting symptoms of a cold or virus, such as fever, cough or shortness of breath, to not come in. We will happily provide masks and gloves for volunteers if you do not have them! Lastly, please wear closed-toe shoes while in the warehouse.

The Check-in volunteers will be tasked with calling numbers for the waiting guests, using their membership card to check them into the food bank, and directing them to the appropriate food line.

This volunteer role involves using our online database to track visits and additional items. You will work alongside a "Hygiene Runner" who will assist in retrieving any additional client needs such as diapers, pet food, menstrual products, and 'No-Cook' bags for people experiencing homelessness.

We are currently checking-in neighbors outdoors in an outdoor, non-climate-controlled area so recommend dressing appropriately.

Additional duties include:

This position will help create No-Cook bags and hygiene items as needed.

Cart runners will assist neighbors with bringing their groceries to their vehicles, and ensure our carts return to us! Please dress for the weather as this position is outdoors.
